Gull - Black Headed Gull

|
A very large gull - thick set, with a powerful beak. It has a heavy flight and can look quite hunched when perched. It will fight off other gulls and chase them to snatch food.
It often scavenges - as do most gulls. It actually poses a real threat to seabird chicks of all species. The black backed gull can also attack, kill and eat adult birds as big as a Puffin or Coot. |
This elegant species of gull with its slender wings and sharp points, its red legs and its smudge behind the eye is really a beautiful bird.
We saw these birds at Garry Beach one breezy day May 2009.These birds fly with to and fro over the water with very full wing-beats, the wings slightly angled back - intermittently |
Near Scarista - Harris we saw this black headed gull whose breeding time is April - July.
Some would think it were a seagull - but it really isn't. These birds are usually seen in groups or flocks. These gulls can be seen on the Western Isles all the year round. |

Common Gull - Garry Beach
Ref:g2009 |
A large gull, the herring gull - up to 26 ins is found all around our coasts. They are noisy birds which are prolific around the western isles. In the winter, the bill is duller, and the head and neck are streaked with grey. |
|
This gull is sometimes mistaken for the great black backed gull - but really it is much more graceful and elegant. It is also similar to the herring gull but the upperwing and back are dark grey to blackish with yellow legs. |
|
Just an ordinary common gull - Garry Beach, Tolsta - Isle of Lewis Mar 2009. The common gull looks like a smaller version of the herring gull, It has greenish legs and a yellow bill. It has much more delicate features than the herring gull |
