Lapwings - Hebridean Birds - Western Isles Birds - Birdlife and Bird Sightings in the Hebrides
The Lapwing from a distance appear black and white below, but closer observation reveals the upperparts as a beautiful iridescent dark green and purple. The breast and cheeks are white and under-tail coverts are orange-brown. The legs are pink.. The Lapwing breeds Mar - June - has up to 4 eggs, incubation period is 26 - 29 days and the young fledge at 35 - 40 days. The lapwing nests on the ground. Juvenile lapwings have a shorter crest and a very scaly back. This was the first reported sighting of a lapwing chick on the Western Isles for this year..

This lapwing was spotted in The Isle Of Harris October 2009 This is a male lapwing with its dark breast and white face.

This lovely lapwing we spotted just a mile or so away from Scarista - Isle of harris
This lovely bird with crest - spotted South Lochs 22nd March 2009. In the spring, amazing aerobatic displays comprising zig zagging flight,  rolls and dives.

Males and female lapwings are similar, except the male's crest is longer and they have blacker breasts and whiter faces.
