Tarbert - Isle of Harris - Western Isles - Outer Hebrides
Tarbert is the main town on the Isle of Harris - Western Isles. Tarbert is the economic and political of Harris in the Outer Hebrides. Tarbert is on the shores of Loch Tarbert. In 1840 a new pier was built, where the ferries from Uig on Skye sail to. Around Tarbert in the mid 1800's there was a large whaling industry which only stopped in the 1950's.The mountains give a fine backdrop for the small town which is actually in the valley that slopes down to the port.

Tarbert (Taibeart)
The name is actually from the Norse words for "a place where boats could be pulled across from the head pf one loch to another" - in this instance its the East Loch to the West Loch. Tarbert is the main community on Harris and is the port where the Calmac Ferries enter and depart from in Harris.
