Tràigh Mheilein - The Isle of Harris - The Outer Hebrides - Western Isles - Beaches
Traigh Mheilein a beautiful beach with pure white fine sand - lies opposite the Island of Scarp. It is a very peaceful Harris beach as it can only be reached by either walking and climbing. From the North side of Huisinis - you take a path - which involves more "scrambling" and climbing than walking - however the views as you traverse the cliffy moorland are well worth it - as is this wonderful beach. This beach has just got to be

This hebridean beach has got to rate as one of the best in The Western Isles.

These lovely wild flowers were just growing on the moor above the beach - I think they are a tytpe of geranium - perhaps a common storksbill, or a cranesbill? If you can assist with identification please email chris@gcwweb.com

The aqua marine blue sea and the lovely golden white sand with the Isle of Scarp in view opposite create such a beautiful sight, here on THe Isle of Harris.

Western Isles - Outer Hebrides - Scotland

Traigh Mheilein is a stunning hebridean beach at the north end of the sandy, shallow Sound of Scarp. It is directly opposite the Isle of Scarp in The Western Isles and to reach it from the North side of Huisinis you have to take a path up the cliffy moorland tops which is indeed almost a "scramble" - but the beach is a splendid reward for your efforts being made up of a beautiful silvery white shell blown sand - and the aqua blue marine sea on a sunny day makes it a splendid sight. The sand is a glorious white colour and so fine - it is made up of partly ground shells which are blown onto the land and this helps to create the stunning fertile machair which can br seen at Huisinis.

The Sound of Scarp separates the island of Scarp from the mainland of Harris. You can see this island straight opposite as you walk towards Traigh Mheilein.

The island of Scarp played a part in the history of the postal service. In 1934 German rocket scientist Gerhardt Zucher tried to persuade the British government to use rockets to send mail and medicine to remote islands. 30,000 pieces of mail were loaded into a canister and fired from Harris across to Scarp. The singed remains ensured that rocket mail is not a postal option today. The slipway is there for going to Scarp, but like Taransay, today the island is almost deserted - however recently a few new houses are being built.
