Stornoway, named by the visting Vikings as "Steering Bay" which, when phonetically translated, became the name Stornoway. There are traditional businesses, fishing, Harris Tweed and farming. Tourism now plays quite a part of the life in Stornoway. The harbour toady is stillo quite busy with freight, ferries and leisure traffic and boats, as well as a significant fishing fleet.
