These pretty pink wildflowers, the dog roses are native to the Western Isles. They are really a scrambling perennial. The stems can reach as high as 3m (9feet) however usually before reaching this height the branches begin to curl over.. It thrives best where it gets bright light. It is a deciduous shrub with stems which are covered with small, sharp prickles which help it to climb.

The Dog Rose grows in open woodland, scrub, hedges and waste ground, and beside roads and paths, . The specimen photographed on this page really was just in the middle of wasteland near to the roadside along the Golden Road in The Isle of Harris.

This rose doesn't have thorns, they are actually spines and there is a difference, in that a thorn is really made from part of the stem, a spine is a modified leaf that is made from a different material than the stem. The thorns point angled downwards and help the plant to climb.
