Blackhouse - Arnol - Isle of Lewis - Western Isles - Outer Hebrides
The blackhouse photographs tell us a lot about what island life was like in The Western Isles in the past. The blackhouse were a residence for both animals and humans. There was no chimney and a peat fire was lit at all times in the centre of the kitchen and living area

Isle of Lewis - History - The Blackhouses - Western Isles
These photographs take us through exactly what life was like in the Blackhouses. The smoky atmosphere and the animals residing in the same space must have made the houses very smelly. A very family friendly place to be though, with weaving and cooking and sleeping all being done in the one living area.
