There are to be installations of around 12 time and tide bells to be situated around the coast of Great Britain. Bosta beach has been chosen to take part in this unique creation of art that will also serve for data recording.
The idea of the Time and Tide Bell is to create, celebrate, and reinforce connections, between different parts of the country, between the land and the sea, between the community and their environment.
Each Bell to be Unique to its Own Site
Although the basic physical structure of the bell stays the same in each site, each bell will also be unique to its own site. Each of the sites bring something particular and unique to the whole group.
The Bell Creates A Musical Pattern
The Time and Tide bells work with the rise and fall of the tides, with the water at high tide moving the clapper to strike the bell. Played by the movement of the waves, the bell creates a constantly varying musical pattern.

Time Piece - Time Marker - Sea Levels and Shoreline
The bell is really a time-piece or time marker - the bell being rung by the movement of the sea at high tide each day.
Long time Marker of Sea Levels
The bell will also serve as a long time marker of the sea levels and indicate to us where the shoreline is now
Global Warming will Affect The Frequency of The Bell Ringing
As the effect of global warming increases and sea levels rise, the bell will strike more frequently
Sound of The Bell
The sound the bell makes or the pitch will vary as the bell is submerged in the water
Important Work of Art - Practical Data Collection
This bell therefore is not only a piece of art - but at a practical level also a very important data collection point for the present time and the future to come.
What more beautiful setting could the Time & Tide Bell possibly have than here in Bosta - Great Bernera
