The Western Isles or as it is also called the Outer Hebrides lies some 40 miles off the north west coast of Scotland. The beautiful empty white sandy beaches and the Atlantic waves set against colourful moorland and rugged mountains along with the amazing wildlife makes this part of Scotland truly unique.
There are quite a few islands that make up the Western Isles. The Outer Hebrides sit North of the Inner Hebrides, and comprise of Lewis, Harris, North Uist, South Uist, Benbecula, Barra, The Flannan Islands, St Kilda, Eriskay and other small islands.
Being Located on on the outer north western edge of Scotland, means the coastline has been shaped over thousands of years by the full force of the Atlantic ocean creating a breathtakingly beautiful coastline and white sandy beaches. The islands span around 130 miles, some being linked by causeways. There are also a number of ferries linking the islands to each other and mainland Scotland.
Inhabited for 1000's years, the islands has plenty of interesting history and places to explore from the magnificent Calanais Standing Stones on Lewis to Bosta Iron Age House on Great Bernera. Getting to the Outer Hebrides is fairly easy. There are daily flights and ferries from Oban, Ullapool and Uig on Skye and the regular inter-island ferries.
