The setting for Broch is really pretty, it is situated at the top of the hill, which of course makes perfect sense as it was designed as a means of defence in the Iron Age. In the summer there are huge amounts of bright heathers to line the way.

Isle of Lewis - History - The Dun Carloway Broch - Western Isles
Dating from the Iron Age, it has actually seen occupants over the centuries. Brochs were built as defensive residences for either important tribal leaders and their families, or for a really important member of the community at that time. Brochs were drystone circular buildings.
